Nakata, Mamoru

Composer: Mamoru Nakata

Mamoru Nakata was born in Okayama, 1953. He received his bachelors and masters degrees from Tokyo University of Arts, studying saxophone with Kozo Maeno, Kazuo Tomioka and Shinryo Sakaguchi. After graduating, the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra accepted him as tenor saxophonist. Nakata has also joined numerous orchestras as a guest player, including for Ravel’s Boléro with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s Japan tour, conducted by Herbert von Karajan.

Nakata actively pursues a number of projects: collaboration on various types of music, concert band arranging, concert planning and management, CD production and conducting. Notably, Nakata’s arrangements are recognized by Dr. Frederick Fennell and Dr. Ray Cramer and performed by world-renowned groups including Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, Dallas Wind Symphony and Indiana University Wind Ensemble.

Nakata frequently attends College Band Directors National Association Conferences, bringing back the latest trends to colleagues in Japan, as he subsequently founded the Japan Wind Ensemble Conductors Conference in 2005. Through its establishment, Nakata has worked to advance the wind band world through his advocacy position as leading band educator and director of the JWECC.

Currently, Nakata is a member of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, musical director of Wind Ensemble Du Nord, conductor of Nagoya Wind Symphony, Vanguard Brass, Bunkyo Wind Orchestra, and president of JWECC.

He is a leading coach and frequent guest conductor of Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare Wind Orchestra “Heartful Winds” and enjoys collaborating with the band.
